How To Lose At Marketing - Be Paul Christoforo

If you're like me - and I know I am - you spend a lot of time on the Internet. That means that unless you've been under a rock this whole weekend, you've heard about the fiasco that is the Ocean Marketing / Avenger saga. I think it's a perfect example of what NOT to do on the Internet. And that is why it is so fun to talk about on the Internet. This article is very long, but stick with me on this one; it's going to be a wild ride. I'll even watch my language for you....

Fan Events are for Fans

Recently, I attended an event in Toronto called FANeXpo. Basically, it's five conventions all rolled up into one event: it's a science fiction, anime, horror, comics and gaming convention, complete with vendors, freebies, and people who are famous essentially for being good at their jobs. It's the biggest genre event in Canada, and I've been there every year for the last 7. Too bad the way it's organized is starting to really suck....

George Lucas Must Be Stopped

Remember when George Lucas was someone to look up to? I remember those days fondly, as they were the days of my youth. I grew up watching Star Wars and Indiana Jones, among other things, and those things I watched (with appropriate guidance from my parents) helped shape my interests and my understanding of the world around me. Ah, those were the days of carefree lollipops and having my teeth knocked out by my brother throwing a couch pillow at me (true story)....

Megan Fox Isn't Hot

Hollywood seems like a breeding ground for physically attractive people. Just as one generation is on its way out, there's a new batch coming up to fill the hotness gap right behind them. In fact, people in Hollywood tend to be so attractive that they're unbelievable in roles where they're meant to be poor, downtrodden, or otherwise undesirable. Ironically, that's not the problem....

Body Image is Important

I've seen a lot of things in my years on this planet. Many of them have been good, and some have been bad, as I like to think you would expect to be the case. I've also spent a fair amount of time on ...let's say 'questionable websites,' seeing content that was uploaded specifically to be shocking or jarring in some way. As a result of this, I have become somewhat desensitized to things that are generally shocking. Based on the wealth of things I've seen through the magical lens of my computer screen, I thought I would be able to see just about anything I was likely to encounter in real life without being surprised or taken aback. It turns out I was wrong....

Criticism

When you're creating something you intend others to see, you should want feedback from people on how you're doing. No man is an island, as the saying goes, and I know that I always prefer having other trusted sets of eyes pass over my pieces (by which I mean things I'm working on, not things I'm "working"). In addition to helping you out, it makes the other person feel like they're contributing positively to what you're doing. Sadly, not everyone feels the same way....

Alcohol Is Not Evil

Everyone knows the dangers of alcohol. If you drink alcohol, you are destined to become a worthless excuse of a human being, beating your children and throwing them at your wife. You will lose everything, your pants will dissolve in water, and to top it all off, chronic halitosis. These are all indisputable facts, right? Right? Well, no....

Earth Hour Is Stupid

Tomorrow is the day we're supposed to celebrate Earth Hour. Wherever you live, between 8:30 and 9:30pm local time you're supposed to turn off as much of your electronics as you can, in an effort to help save the world from Global Warming. If only it were that simple, it wouldn't be such a pointless exercise....

Screw Pearl Harbor

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last 2 days, you know that Japan was rocked on Friday by a massive earthquake, followed by a 30 foot tsunami. Compounding those factors are an exploding oil refinery, two nuclear reactors that are having trouble shutting down properly, and a forced closure of a non-trivial amount of traffic in and out of the country. People are dead, people are missing, and people are stranded. So why do Americans feel the need to make this all about them?...

Accountability Is Important, Sarah Palin

A lot of what I write about on this site can be boiled down to personal accountability. If you screw up, just admit you screwed up so we can all move on with our lives. Somehow, this simple idea has been completely lost on most people. The lengths to which people will go to duck accountability and responsibility are almost shocking, and this has to stop....
